What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that are surgically implanted into the jawbone. They consist of a threaded metal post that acts as the "root" and a permanent crown that replaces the visible portion of the missing tooth.

How are Implants Different from Veneers, Bridges, or other Restorations?

  • Veneers can make a smile appear white and regular, but they adhere to existing teeth -- they're not replacement teeth.
  • Conventional bridges are anchored to natural teeth but don't extend below the gum line.
  • Conventional dentures are meant to be removable, being held in place via suction or denture adhesive.

What are the Special Advantages of Dental Implants?

Since dental implants actually extend into your jaw, their presence can prevent progressive bone loss that might otherwise deform your facial structure. This permanent attachment also means that they never slip when you talk or eat. Unlike removable dental appliances, you can brush and floss your implants just as you would your natural teeth.

How Does your Dentist Determine Whether I'm a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

A dental exam will reveal if your gums are healthy and if you have sufficient bone dentistry in your jaw to tolerate implants. Even if you're not a candidate right now, periodontal treatment or bone grafts may make you eligible for future implantation. Other chronic health problems might cause our dentist to recommend a different option.

What are the Stages of Implant Dentistry?

The metal post is inserted in the socket of the missing tooth. The jawbone grows into the threads of the post, securing it to the jaw. A second post attached to this post (known as an abutment) will hold the crown. The crown is then created and attached to the abutment.

How Long Does the Total Process Take?

Allow up to 12 weeks for the jawbone to heal sufficiently to anchor the post in place. Once this phase is over with, the creation and fitting of the crown proceed relatively quickly.

Can I Replace Multiple Teeth Through implant Dentistry?

Yes! We can even attach an entire row of false teeth to just a few implant posts.
